A no-nonsense administrator, he did not let procedures come in the way. The death anniversary of this builder of modern Punjab falls today (February 6).

Partap Singh Kairon cut through the humbug of politics and morality of India after Independence. He was not one to accept that paraphernalia of sighs and aspirations which often masqueraded as policy in the newly independent nation. Not for him the support to a laughable prohibition or the lamentable support to khadi in a country that was one of the larger producers and exporters of textiles in the world. Kairon’s world was one in which industrialisation and science were the devices for moving forward.
Kairon was well known for not tolerating any nonsense and did not hesitate in calling a spade a shovel if that could get work done. Efficiency mattered, malfeasance was frowned upon. Procedures were meant to help decision-making rather than hamper them and if someone stood in the way, so much the worse for them. Bureaucrats, political colleagues and many others recalled being at the receiving end of Kairon’s ire.
On the eve of Independence Punjab had a surfeit of leaders. Each jockeying for positions of power, for pelf was yet not the main accompaniment of power. While Gopi Chand Bhargava and Bhim Sen Sachar led their own factions, Kairon carved a place for himself as a go-getter minister who could be relied to deliver on important tasks. As Sachar and Bhargava toppled each other’s ministries in quick succession they needed help from Kairon. Kairon in turn bargained for important portfolios like irrigation, development, forest, revenue, agriculture and veterinary. These in turn would enable Kairon to initiate the process of his dreams: to convert Punjab from being a mere supplier of military canon-fodder to the nation to an industrial and economic power-house.

Empowered the farmer

First as a minister and later as Chief Minister, Kairon did wonders for laying the foundation of modern agriculture in Punjab. He piloted various land reforms acts that empowered the actual cultivator. The processes that Kairon began of state-sponsored consolidation of land, construction of access roads and electrification would ultimately enable Punjab to emerge as the state that fed the nation single-handed. The per capita income of the state indicated the growth of Punjab under the Kairon style of development. From Rs. 321 in 1952-53 when the first elected government was formed in Punjab the per capita income increased to Rs. 331 in 1955-56, an increase of just over 3%. In the next five years, those were also the first five years of Kairon’s chief ministership, the per capita income increased more than 20% to Rs. 401 far outstripping the growth of income in India as a whole. Kairon hoped that if progress continued at the same pace it might be possible for Punjab to match the economic prosperity of Europe in about three years.
The recommendations of the States Reorganisation Commission in 1955 created considerable disturbances within the Congress ranks in Punjab. Chief Minister Sachar and Lala Jagat Narain were all for the full implementation of the SRC recommendations with regard to Punjab. However, Kairon was opposed to the idea of including Himachal Pradesh as part of Punjab. When Kairon let it be known in clear terms what he thought of those who supported the SRC on Punjab, Prabodh Chandra, then a Parliamentary Secretary, felt offended enough to submit his resignation in protest against the ‘open indignity’ inflicted on him by Kairon during the assembly debate on the SRC.

Tough with agitations

Kairon had great difficulty in reconciling himself with the Sachar government’s namby-pamby handling of various Akali agitations that were threatening to divide the state. Language, religion, caste and other hackneyed points of identity politics on which the Akalis wanted to reach out to the masses were anathema to a modernist Kairon. As the Akali agitation spread so did police action. In one instance, on July 4, 1955, when the agitators took shelter in a place of religious worship the police was forced to enter and arrest them. The Akalis took this to be a major sacrilege and forced the Chief Minister to publicly apologise for the police action.
With Congress Chief Minister Sachar showing signs of succumbing to the Akali demand to de facto divide the state into separate Hindi and Punjabi-speaking zones Kairon had little hesitation in leading a campaign to condemn the CM even though Sachar had the whole-hearted backing of Prime Minister Nehru himself for accepting some of the Akali demands in identity politics. The differences between the CM and his most important minister became so sharp that the CM asked for the resignation of the minister. Kairon refused. When Sachar complained to Nehru the Prime Minister responded in a letter to Sachar dated August 5, 1955, that the government of Punjab needed both Sachar and Kairon, and that from some points of view Kairon was more indispensable of the two. Finally, it was the CM who had to go. The Congress Legislative Party selected Kairon to be the new CM.
Kairon turned out to be the longest running CM that Punjab has seen since Independence. He remained at the helm of affairs for more than eight continuous years that no other CM has been able to match till now.

Thrust on education

As Chief Minister, Kairon came into his own. He had already overseen the construction of the Bhakra dam as the minister in charge of irrigation. Now, as CM he sought to increase the position of Punjab in the field of higher education for without higher education, according to Kairon, it was impossible for a people to get ahead in life. The budget for higher education was increased by almost 50 times to a grand Rs. 17 crore.
Important institutions of higher learning like Punjab Agriculture University and the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research were set up. Plans were initiated to also establish a university in Patiala to improve the condition of the Punjabi language and another in Kurukshetra to promote studies in Indic culture and thought. In a small state like Punjab four universities were now available. Three full-fledged engineering colleges, polytechnics in each district and four medical colleges too were established at the behest of Kairon.
As a minister in the department of development Kairon launched a campaign to penalise those officers who were inefficient and/or dishonest. As newspapers reported it, he had a team of five trusted officers who would sift through the mass of petitions complaining against the government and then send out his own agents into the field to check out things.
Sometimes his agents also went in the garb of sadhus to find out the truth about the functioning of the government. By November 1953, he had penalised over 400 officers of which some 200 were from his own departments. “87 officers were discharged, 40 dismissed, seven convicted and ten reverted”, was how a newspaper put it. Senior ICS officers who were accused of corruption were immediately punished. When patwaris, the village-level revenue officials, went on strike, Kairon took steps to break the strike even while ensuring that the work of the people did not suffer. To the officers of the civil services he would sternly warn about zero tolerance towards communalism or any other kind of partisanship.
At the same time, he did not hesitate to stand by his officers and protect them from unfair allegations. The “Mahapunjab” agitation got out of hand in Hoshiarpur in 1956. The subsequent strong police action was condemned by many newspapers and the police was charged with having molested the agitating women. Some people even sat on a hunger strike to force the government to take action against the police. However, the Chief Minister insisted that notice also needed to be taken of the fact that the agitators had killed a police constable and that action against the police would be initiated only after a proper investigation. The subsequent inquiry absolved the police of any wrongdoing.

Dream for the region

On becoming Chief Minister Kairon began to rethink his position on the nature of the state of Punjab. While earlier he had opposed the inclusion of Himachal in Punjab now he suggested that not only Himachal, but also the large region that had been associated with the rivers of Punjab—including Jammu and Kashmir and parts of Rajasthan— should be part of a single regional entity. That would provide these states greater leverage in the federal structure of India as also enable them to leverage their respective strengths. Not much came out of this idea of Punjab because of its rejection by Jammu and Kashmir.
Kairon’s first term was marked by continuous battles against linguistic sectarianism. The champions of Hindi and Punjabi were busy battling it out on the streets and the government was hard put to ensure peace and quiet in the Punjab and Haryana region. A fallout of the uncompromising position taken up by the government was witnessed in the elections when Kairon was barely able to keep his seat in the Sarhali constituency by mere 31 votes. His Akali opponent, Mohan Singh Tur, was in prison at that time awaiting trial for activities in the Punjabi suba agitation. While Kairon won by a narrow margin, the Congress party won 128 seats, by far the largest number ever since Independence. The numerous contenders to the post of Chief Minister were silenced by Nehru’s support to Kairon, who formed his new ministry on March 11, 1962.

Enemies galore

By now however, Kairon had made far too many enemies. Even Feroze Gandhi, the most recent opponent of Nehru and his friends, had begun to take swings at Kairon. Feroze Gandhi charged Kairon with being in cahoots with smugglers and worse. “What explanation is there”, Gandhi would demand, “when a person with six previous convictions to his credit…had the daring to appear before a court of law and file an affidavit to the effect that the Chief Minister had directed the withdrawal of the case pending against him and that the order would reach the court from the Home Secretary?” [Times of India, January 8, 1960].
When it was not possible to corner the CM on such charges his opponents turned to attack his family. His wife and sons were implicated in various wrongdoings and were charged with using the influence of the CM’s office for personal gains. At the same time news began to filter in of various conspiracies to assassinate the Chief Minister. By October 1961, the Punjab police claimed to have unearthed at least three plots to kill Kairon. At his assassination in 1965, E N Mangat Rai, ICS, who had worked with Kairon for long years wrote in a [then unpublished] letter to newspapers, “I thought such reprisal may…come much earlier than it has”.

ਪੱਟੀ, 5 ਅਗਸਤ (ਨਿ. ਪ. ਪ.)-ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਸੀਨੀ: ਸੈਕੰ: ਸਕੂਲ ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਅੱਜ ਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਤਿਓਹਾਰ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਤੀਸਰੀ ਕਲਾਸ ਤੋਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵੀਂ ਕਲਾਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥਣਾਂ ਨੇ ਗਿੱਧਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਬਣਾਇਆ। ਮਹਿਲਾ ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਵਧਾਇਆ। ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਪੀਘਾਂ ਪਵਾਈਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਖਾਣ-ਪੀਣ ਦੇ ਵੱਖੋ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਸਟਾਲ ਲਗਵਾਏ ਗਏ। ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਸ੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਜਸਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਦੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੋਈ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀ: ਮੈਡਮ ਦੇ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੜੀ ਬਣਾਂਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਉਪਰ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਲਗਵਾਉਣ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਗਏ। ਰੱਖੜੀ ਕੰਪਟੀਟੀਸ਼ਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਿੰਦੀ ਕੰਪੀਟੀਸ਼ਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਪਨਦੀਪ ਕੌਰ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪੁਜੀਸ਼ਨ, ਹਰਮਹਿਜਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਦੂਜੀ ਪੁਜੀਸ਼ਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਮਨਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਤੀਸਰੀ ਪੁਜੀਸ਼ਨ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਸ਼ਰਨ ਕੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਵਲਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਦਰਜਾ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਰਮਨਦੀਪ ਕੌਰ ਦੂਜੇ ਅਤੇ ਜਸਮੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਤੀਸਰੀ ਪੁਜੀਸ਼ਨ ਉਪਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ। ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਨਾਮ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਮੈਨੇਜਰ ਸ: ਭਰਪੂਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਬਲਦੇਵ ਸਿੰਘ ਚੌਹਾਨ ਸਕੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਸ੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਜਸਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਹੁਰਾਂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁੱਭ ਇਛਾਵਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ।

ਪੱਟੀ, 5 ਅਗਸਤ (ਖਹਿਰਾ)-ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ-ਭਾਜਪਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੇ ਚੋਣ ਵਾਅਦਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਨਕਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਿਤੈਸ਼ੀ ਅਖਵਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਹ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਮਾਨਸਾ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ 'ਚ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਪੁਰ ਦੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਬਰੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਐਕਵਾਇਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਉਪਰ ਲਾਠੀਚਾਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇ ਖੂਨ ਸੜਕਾਂ ਉਪਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਤਰਾਂ ਇਸ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਵਹਾਇਆ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਵਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਕੋਟ ਬੁੱਢਾ, ਜੌਲੇਕੇ, ਸੀਤੋ, ਸਭਰਾ, ਵਿਖੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਇਕੱਠਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਕਨਵੀਨਰ ਕੰਵਲਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੰਨੂੰ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਬਾਦਲ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਬੋਰਡ ਉਪਰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਚਲਾਇਆ। ਖੇਤੀ ਮੋਟਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਿੱਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਾਈਕਾਟ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਕਾਏ ਅਜੇ ਤੱਕ ਮੁਆਫ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਬਿੱਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੁਆਫੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਕੋਈ ਨੋਟੀਫਿਕੇਸ਼ਨ ਅੱਜ ਤੱਕ ਜਾਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ 17 ਕਿਸਾਨ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਹੱਕੀ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਚੋਣ ਵਾਅਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਗੂ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਲਈ 1 ਤੋਂ 3 ਸਤੰਬਰ ਤੱਕ ਚੰਡੀਗੜ੍ਹ ਵਿਖੇ ਮੋਰਚਾ ਲਾਉਣ ਜਾ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਆਰ-ਪਾਰ ਦਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਕਰਮਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਲਵੰਡੀ, ਇੰਦਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੋਟਬੁੱਢਾ, ਭਾਗ ਸਿੰਘ, ਬੂਟਾ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸੁਖਰਾਜ ਸਿੰਘ, ਮੱਘਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸੋਹਣ ਸਿੰਘ, ਧਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ, ਜਗੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੀਤੋ, ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਆਦਿ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਪੱਟੀ, 3 ਅਗਸਤ (ਕਾਲੇਕੇ)-ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਟੇਟ ਜਾਇੰਟ ਐਕਸ਼ਨ ਕਮੇਟੀ (ਹਿਜਰਤਕਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਅੱਤਵਾਦ ਪੀੜਤ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ) ਦੀ ਤਹਿਸੀਲ ਪੱਟੀ ਇਕਾਈ ਦੀ ਇਕੱਤਰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਓਮ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨਗੀ ਹੇਠ ਹੋਈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਇਕੱਤਰ ਅੱਤਵਾਦ ਪੀੜਤ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਜ਼ੋਰਦਾਰ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਣਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਜਲਦ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਪੋਸ਼ਣ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਭਾਜਪਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਚਾਰ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਅੱਤਵਾਦ ਪੀੜਤ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਣਦੀਆਂ ਸਹੂਲਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਏ. ਕੇ. ਤਲਵਾੜ ਤੇ ਆਧਾਰਤਿ ਟੀਮ ਨੇ ਪੀੜਤ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੀਆ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਇਸ ਅਗਸਤ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਜੋ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਜਲਦ ਪੂਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ। ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਹੰਢਾ ਰਹੇ ਪੀੜਤ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਪੋਸ਼ਣ ਸਹੀ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ। ਇਸ ਇਕੱਤਰਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਹਰਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੈਕਟਰੀ, ਪ੍ਰਮਜੀਤ, ਦਲਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਨਗੋਟਾ, ਕੁਲਵੰਤ ਰਾਏ, ਮਹਿਲ ਸਿੰਘ, ਕੁਲਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਮਹਿਲ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪੂਰਨ ਚੰਦ ਖਾਲੜਾ, ਊਸ਼ਾ ਰਾਣੀ, ਓਮ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਖਾਲੜਾ, ਸਤਪਾਲ ਭਿੱਖੀਵਿੰਡ, ਬਲਵੰਤ ਰਾਏ ਭਿੱਖੀਵਿੰਡ, ਪਾਲੋ, ਸਵਰਨੀ, ਨਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਆਦਿ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਸਨ।

ਪੱਟੀ, 3 ਅਗਸਤ (ਕੁਲਵਿੰਦਰ ਕਾਲੇਕੇ)- ਤਹਿਸੀਲ ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਨਿੱਕੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਮਾਣਕਪੁਰਾ ਦੇ ਉਦਮੀ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਗੁਰਸ਼ਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿਰਦੀ ਨੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਲਵੰਤ ਕੌਰ ਯਾਦਗਾਰੀ ਲਾਇਬ੍ਰੇੇਰੀ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾਯੋਗ ਕਦਮ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਾਣਕਪੁਰਾ ਨੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਲਾਇਬ੍ਰੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸ: ਵਿਰਦੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਵੈੱਬਸਾਈਟ <ਮਮਮ.ਠ਼ਅ਼ਾਬਚਗ਼.ਫਰਠ> ਬਣਾਉਣ 'ਤੇ ਵਧਾਈ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਹੇ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਗੁਰਸ਼ਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਪਰੋਕਤ ਲਾਇਬ੍ਰੇਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਹਿਤ ਸਭਾ ਨਵੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮੁਫ਼ਤ ਉਚ ਦਰਜੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ, ਹਿੰਦੀ, ਉਰਦੂ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਰੂਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਵਿਦਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਭੇਜੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਆਸ-ਪਾਸ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ, ਨੌਜਵਾਨ, ਅਧਿਆਪਕ, ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਸਵਾਣੀਆਂ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਉਠਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਇਸ ਲਾਇਬ੍ਰੇਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਸਾਰੇ ਉਦਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਹਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਖਹਿਰਾ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਪੱਟੀ, 3 ਅਗਸਤ (ਖਹਿਰਾ, ਜੌਲੀ)-ਸਥਾਨਕ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਗਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਸੈ: ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਖਿਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਜੋਨ ਪੱਧਰ ਤੋਂ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਪੱਧਰ ਤਕ ਦਾ ਸਫਰ ਤੈਅ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇਂਦਿਆਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਿੰ: ਸ੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੁਲਾ ਭਾਰਦਵਾਜ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੀ ਫੁੱਟਬਾਲ ਟੀਮ ਜੋਨਲ ਪੱਧਰ 'ਤੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਰਹੀ। ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਪੱਧਰ 'ਤੇ ਬਾਸਕਿਟਬਾਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਟੀਮਾਂ (ਲੜਕੇ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ) ਦੂਸਰੇ ਸਥਾਨ 'ਤੇ ਰਹੀਆਂ। ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਜ ਪੱਧਰ ਦੇ ਖੇਡ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੀ ਫੁੱਟਬਾਲ ਟੀਮ ਦੇ 5 ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਸਕਿਟ ਬਾਲ ਟੀਮ ਦੇ 6 ਖਿਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਹੋਈ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਰਾਜ ਪੱਧਰ ਦੇ ਖੇਡ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਗੁਰਸ਼ਰਨਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਬਾਕਸਿੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਤੀਸਰਾ ਸਥਾਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਸੱਤਿਅਮਜੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਨਵਰਾਜ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਪੱਧਰ ਲਈ ਚੁਣੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸਕੂਲ ਅਤੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਲਈ ਬੜੇ ਹੀ ਮਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ । ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਡੀ. ਪੀ. ਕਰਨਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਦੇ ਚੇਅਰਮੈਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਇਕਬਾਲ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਤੇ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਜੇਸ਼ ਭਾਰਦਵਾਜ਼ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਖਿਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਇਛਾਵਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ। ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਿੰ: ਸ੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੁਲਾ ਭਾਰਦਵਾਜ ਨੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਖਿਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਪੱਧਰ 'ਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਪੱਟੀ, 3 ਅਗਸਤ (ਪ. ਪ.)-ਸੈਕਰਡ ਹਾਰਟ ਕਾਨਵੈਂਟ ਸਕੂਲ ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੜੀ ਦੇ ਤਿਓਹਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੱਖ ਰਖਦਿਆਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਫਾਦਰ ਲਾਰੈਂਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਰੱਖੜੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਗਏ, ਵਿਚ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲਿਆ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਸਿਸਟਰ ਜੱਸਾ ਨੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਿਓਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਅਹਿਮੀਅਤ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਵਿਚ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਆਖਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਹਿਲੇ, ਦੂਜੇ ਅਤੇ ਤੀਸਰੇ ਨੰਬਰ ਤੇ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਅਫਜਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ। ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਦਾ ਸਮੂਹ ਸਟਾਫ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਸੀ।

ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਜਾਂ ਕਸਬੇ ਦੀ ਮਹਾਨਤਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੀ ਸਾਡੇ ਮਨਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੋਹਰ ਛਾਪ ਲਗਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਪੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਨਾਂ ਹੈ- ਪੱਟੀ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹਦੀ।
ਕੋਈ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਸੀ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੋਰਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਤਕੀਆ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ। ਪੱਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੇ ਫ਼ਾਸਲੇ ‘ਤੇ ਵਸੇ-ਰਸੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਆਸਲ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਕੀਆ ਬਣਾਇਆ। ਚਹੁੰ-ਕੂਟ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬੜੀ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਸੀ।

ਪਿੰਡ ਆਸਲ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਹਸੀਨ ਜੱਟੀ ਨੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਕਦਮਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਧਰ ਕੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਭਿੱਖਿਆ ਮੰਗੀ। ਸਾਈਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਿੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਬ ਤੋਂ ਦੁਆ ਮੰਗੀ। ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਝ ਨਾ ਪਈ ਕਿ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਦਰਵੇਸ਼ ਇਸ ਹਸੀਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਬਾਬਲ ਵਾਂਗ ਅਸੀਸ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ਼ਕੇ ਹਕੀਕੀ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਮਜ਼ਾਜੀ ਨੇ ਡੇਰਾ ਚਾਅ ਲਾਇਆ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਿਆ-ਕੁੱਟਿਆ ਤੇ ਜੱਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੀ ਟੋਟੇ-ਟੋਟੇ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਸਾਈਂ ਨੇ ਸੱਤ ਦਿਨ ਨਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਤਾ, ਨਾ ਅੰਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੂੰਹ ਲਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਰਦਗਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਬਦ-ਦੁਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਪਿੰਡ ਆਸਲ ਤਿੰਨ ਵਾਰ ਉਜੜੇਗਾ। ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਕਸੌਟੀ ‘ਤੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਦੀ ਲਕੀਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੱਚ ਸਿੱਧ ਹੋਈ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਹੀਂ। ਅਸ਼ੁਭ, ਅਮੰਗਲ ਤੇ ਅਨਿਸ਼ਟ ਦੀ ਸੂਚਨਾ ਹੈ। ਭਿਰਗੂ ਜੋਤਸ਼ੀ ਠੀਕ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ- ‘ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਲਾਂ-ਕਾਂ ਉੱਡਣਗੇ। ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਮੋਹਤਬਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਇਹ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਆਸਲ ਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਲਈ ਫਾਤਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਮੀਲ ਕੁ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਥ ‘ਤੇ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੇ ਤਕੀਏ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਨਵਾਂ ਨਗਰ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ‘ਪੱਟੀ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ’ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ।

ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਖਸਤਾਹਾਲ ਕਿਲੇ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਤਸਵੀਰ

ਮਿਸਲ ਬੰਦੋਬਸਤ ਸੰਨ 1862 ਮੌਜ਼ਿਆ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਤੱਸਮੀਆ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਬਿਆਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ‘ਪੱਟੀ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ’ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪੱਟੀ ਥਾਣੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਨ 1930 ਦੀ (ਕਲਮ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਖੀ) ਐਫ.ਆਈ.ਆਰ. ਦਰਜ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ- ‘ਅਸਲ ਕਸਬਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੱਟੀ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ, ਥਾਂ। ਮਗਰ ਬਿਗੜਤਾ-ਬਿਗੜਤਾ ਹੂਆ ‘ਪੱਟੀ’ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਔਰ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਕੀ, ਨਾਮ ਬਲਜ੍ਹਾ ਲੰਬਾ ਹੋਨੇ ਕੇ ਜਾਤਾ ਰਹਾ। ਅੱਬ ਬੀ ਤਕੀਆ ਹੈਬਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਮੋਰਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੱਟੀ ਕੇ ਰਾਸਤਾ ਆਸਲ ਪਰ ਜਾਨਬ ਜਨੂਬ ਵਾਕਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਸੀ ਕਸਬਾ ਕੇ ਅਸਲ ਮਾਲਕ ਮੁਗ਼ਲ ਥੇ। ਮਗਰ ਅਯਾਸ਼ੀ ਕੀ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਸੇ ਉਨਹੋਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਲੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਬਿਗਾੜ ਲੀ। ਇਸ ਵਕਤ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਅਹਿਸਾਬ ਬੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਮੇਂ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ। ਸ਼ਰਾਰਤ ਕੇ ਲਿਹਾਜ਼ ਸੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਔਰ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਏਕ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਸੇ ਕਮ ਨਹੀਂ।’
ਮੁਲਕ ਦੀ ਤਕਸੀਮ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਸਦੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤਕ ਪੱਟੀ ਉਤੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਅਮੀਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਲਬਾ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਗ਼ਲ ਸਮਰਾਟ ਦੇ ਜਵਾਈ ਭਾਈ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਜਿਉਂ-ਜਿਉਂ ਮੁਗ਼ਲ ਸਾਮਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੀਰਾਜ਼ਾ ਬਿਖਰਦਾ ਗਿਆ, ਤਿਉਂ-ਤਿਉਂ ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿਚੱ ਮਿਰਜ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਪਤਲੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਗਈ। ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸੱਯਾਉੱਲਾ ਦਾ ਜੋ ਹਸ਼ਰ ਹੋਇਆ, ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੇਦਨਾ ਦਾ ਕੰਢਾ ਬੜਾ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ। ਖਾਨਦਾਨ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਵਾਲ ਇਸ ਹੱਦ ਤਕ ਪੁੱਜ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਆਲੀਸ਼ਾਨ ਕੋਠੀ ਕਸੂਰ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਲਾਲਾ ਬਲਾਕੀ ਸ਼ਾਹ ‘ਮਿੱਟੀ-ਪੁੱਟ’ ਕੋਲ ਗਹਿਣੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ। ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੇ ਰੋਅਬ-ਦਾਬ ਤੇ ਤਕੱਬਰ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਹਾਲ ਕਿ ਰੱਸੀ ਸੜ ਗਈ, ਵਲ ਨਾ ਗਿਆ। ਬਲਾਕੀ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਹੱਠ-ਧਰਮੀ ਵੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਿਰਦਈ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮਜਬੂਰ। ਉਹ ਕੋਠੀ ਨੀਲਾਮ ਕਰਵਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਗੜੀ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਵੇਂ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਖਿਮਾ ਮੰਗੀ। ਬਲਾਕੀ ਸ਼ਾਹ ‘ਮਿੱਟੀ ਪੁੱਟ’ ਠਹਿਰਿਆ ਪੱਕਾ ਬਾਣੀਆ, ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸ਼ਰਤ ‘ਤੇ ਰਾਜ਼ੀ ਹੋਇਆ ਕਿ ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਹੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਠੂਠਾ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਭਰੇ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ-ਇੱਕ ਪੈਸੇ ਦੀ ਭੀਖ ਮੰਗਣ ਤਾਂ ਅਸਲ ਤੇ ਵਿਆਜ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਮੁਆਫ! ਮਿਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ-ਖਲਾਸੀ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਸ਼ਰਤ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਪਈ।
ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਕੋਈ ਲੁਕੀ-ਛੁਪੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਮਿਰਜ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਫ਼ਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਜਾਮ ਭਰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਅੱਯਾਸ਼ੀ ਦੀ ਨੁਮਾਇਸ਼ ਕਦੀ-ਕਦੀ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਮਹਿਫ਼ਿਲ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਧਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਜਦ ਕਈ-ਕਈ ਰਾਤਾਂ, ਖ਼ਬਰੇ ਕਿਸ-ਕਿਸ ਨਰਤਕੀ ਦਾ ਰਕਸੋ ਸਰੂਦ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਨੂੰ ਨਸ਼ਿਆ ਦਿੰਦਾ! ਭਾਵੇਂ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਖੱਤਰੀ ਮਹਾਜਨ ਸੂਰਜ ਡੁੱਬਣ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਸੁਆਣੀ ਜਾਂ ਕੰਜਕ ਨੂੰ ਘਰੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ ਦਿੰਦੇ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ‘ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਰਜ਼ੇ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਹਰ ਧੀ-ਭੈਣ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਧੀ-ਭੈਣ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਇਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਦੀਨ-ਇਮਾਨ!
ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਜੈਨ ਮੰਦਰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਇੱਕ ਮਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੈਨ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਕਾਰਾਗਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਉ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਵਰ, ਸੁਣੱਪ ਦਾ ਵਰ, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਉਤੇ ਬੇਗਿਣਤ ਧਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਏਨਾ ਵੱਸੇਗਾ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੇਖ-ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਖੀਵੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਉਗੇ। ਮੂਰਤੀਆਂ ਵਿਚਲੀ ਮਨ-ਮੋਹਨੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਕਰੇਗੀ। ਨਵੀਂ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਜਗਾ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ। ਜੈਨ ਉਪਾਸਰੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਬੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਵਾਨ ਵਰਗੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਚੰਦਰਮਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ, ਪਰ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ!
ਬੀਤੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਿਵਜੀ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮੰਦਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਵਗਦੀ ਰੋਹੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਲਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਯੁੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਚੇ ਥੇਹ ਦੇ ਕੰਢੇ ਨਾਲ ਆ ਕੇ ਟੱਕਰ ਖਾਧੀ। ਟਿੱਬੇ ਨਾਲ ਖਹਿ ਕੇ ਛੱਲ ਅਟਕ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਬਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ, ਅਚਾਨਕ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਵੱਖੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਧਸ ਗਈ। ਮੰਦਰ ਜੋ ਵਿਰਾਟ ਥੇਹ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਦਲ ਗਿਆ, ਮੁੜ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਅਰਪਨ

ਵੱਡਾ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ- ‘ਭੱਠ ਸਾਹਿਬ’ ਬਿਧੀ ਚੰਦ ਦਾ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬਾਬਾ ਬਿਧੀ ਚੰਦ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਤਾਂ ‘ਸੁਰਸਿੰਘ’ ਦਾ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਨਕੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਸਰਹਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਸਨ। ਇੱਕ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਪੰਜਵੇਂ ਅਤੇ ਛੇਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਤੀਤ ਹੋਇਆ। ਸੇਵਕ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੀ ‘ਬਿਧੀ ਚੰਦ ਛੀਨਾ’ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਾ ਸੀਨਾ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਉਭਰਿਆ।
ਪੱਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਬੀਬੀ ਰਜਨੀ ਦੀ ਦੰਤ ਕਥਾ ਵੀ ਨਜ਼ਰਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ। ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਪੁੱਤਰੀ ਸੀ ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਭਿਸ਼ਾਪ ਕਾਰਨ ਇੱਕ ਪਿੰਗਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਹ ਸਤਵੰਤੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਟੋਕਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ‘ਤੇ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਦਰ-ਦਰ ਨਗਰ ਗਿਰਾਂ ਭਿਕਸ਼ਣੀ ਵਾਕਣ ਘੁੰਮਦੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਜਾ ਪੁੱਜੀ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਇੱਕ ਨਿੱਕੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਸਰਵਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹਾਉਣ ਸਦਕਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਕੋਹੜ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਥਨ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਸੇ ਸਰਵਰ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੇ ‘ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ’ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲਈ ਚੁਣਿਆ। ਬੀਬੀ ਰਜਨੀ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੱਟੀ ਰੇਲਵੇ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਐਨ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਸਮੁੰਦਰੀ (ਵਾਈਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ) ਦੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਬਾਬਾ ਕਹਿਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਰਵਾਈ।
ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਨਜ਼ਦੀਕ ਸਰਹਾਲੀ (ਸੰਤ ਬਾਬਾ ਤਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਾਲੀ), ਚੋਹਲਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇ ਗੋਇੰਦਵਾਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਹਨ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਕਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਪਏ। ਪੰਜਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਤੇ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਐਨ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਤਰਨਤਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਬਣਾਈ।
ਪੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਮੀਰ ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਦੂਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਸ. ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੈਰੋਂ ਦਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੀ ਦੂਰੀ ‘ਤੇ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕੈਰੋਂ ਦੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਸ. ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੈਰੋਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਪਰ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਅੱਜ ਤਕ ਕਿਸੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਤਕਸੀਮ 15 ਅਗਸਤ 1947 ਨੂੰ ਹੋਈ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ 26 ਜਨਵਰੀ 1948 ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਜੋਸ਼ੋ-ਖਰੋਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ! ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਭੀਮ ਸੈਨਾ ਸੱਚਰ, ਡਾ. ਗੋਪੀ ਚੰਦ ਭਾਰਗੋ ਉਸ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮਹਿਮਾਨ ਸਨ। ਫ਼ੌਜ ਦੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਟੁਕੜੀ ਨੇ ਮਾਰਚ-ਪਾਸਟ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਸਲਾਮੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਮੁੱਖ ਮਹਿਮਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ) ਤਕਰੀਰ ਕੀਤੀ। ਸ. ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੈਰੋਂ ਨੇ (ਕੈਰੋਂ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ) ਠੇਠ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲੀ ਜਜ਼ਬਾਤ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਕੀਤੇ। ਇਸ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਦਾ ਕਰਤਾ-ਧਰਤਾ ਖੁਦ ਸ. ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੈਰੋਂ ਸੀ। ਸਰਦਾਰ ਕੈਰੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਦਾ, ਖਾਸ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਮਾਝੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਇਕ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਉਭਰਿਆ। ਕਿਸੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੀ ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਨਜ਼ਾਰਿਆਂ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਸਗੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਵੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਸੁਹੱਪਣ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਝੈਲ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਬੇ-ਸੰਕੋਚ ਸੱਜਣਤਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਵੀ ਹੈ। ਖੇਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਸੁਹੱਪਣ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਪਛਾਣਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, ਦੁਮੇਲ ਦੀ ਲਕੀਰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਥ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਾਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਬੁਲਾਉਂਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਟੀ ਕਦੀ ਫੜਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦੀ।
ਪੱਟੀ ਮੁਗ਼ਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਠਾਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੀ। ਗੌਰੀ, ਖਿਲਜੀ, ਤੁਗ਼ਲਕ- ਅੱਡੋ-ਅੱਡ ਮੁਹੱਲੇ। ਕਾਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੁਹੱਲਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ। ਨਿੱਕੀਆਂ ਨਿੱਕੀਆਂ ਖਾਨਗਾਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਚੁਗੱਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪੱਟੀ, ਛੇਵੀਂ-ਸੱਤਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੀਨ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਯਾਤਰੀ ‘ਹਿਊਨ ਸਾਂਗ’ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਫ਼ਰਨਾਮੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ-ਪੂਰਵਕ ਪੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਾਬਾ ਪੀਰਾਂ ਸਾਹਬ ਦੀ ਨੌ-ਗਜ਼ੀ ਕਬਰ ਅੰਧ-ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਕੀਨ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਕਰਾਮਾਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਹੈ। ਮੂਲ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਾਰਸੀ ਸ਼ਬਦ- ‘ਨੌਅ-ਗਾਜ਼ੀ’ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਗੜ ਕੇ ਨੌਗਜ਼ੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ। ਜਿੱਥੇ ਅੱਜਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਕਲੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ‘ਰਾਮ ਭਰੋਸੇ’ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਖਾਨਗਾਹ ‘ਤੇ ਪੀਰ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਅਲੀ ਦਾ ਮੇਲਾ ਭਾਦੋਂ ਦੀ ਪੰਦਰਵੇਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੜੀ ਧੂਮ-ਧਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਪੀਰ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਅਲੀ ਪਿੰਡ ਘੜਿਆਲੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਸ਼ੇਰਸ਼ਾਹ ਵਲੀ ਦਾ ਭਰਾ ਸੀ। ਭਲੇ ਸਮਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜ-ਪੰਜ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਖਾਨਗਾਹ ‘ਤੇ ਸਿਜਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਪੁੱਜਦੇ। ਦੇਗਾਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਚੂਰਮੇ ਵੰਡੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ।
ਪੱਟੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਆਲੇ-ਦੁਆਲੇ ਹਰ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਧੜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੱਝਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਦੰਗਾ-ਫਸਾਦ ਜਾਂ ਕਤਲ ਕਰਨਾ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਝੈਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਦਤ ਹੈ। ਚੋਰੀ, ਯਾਰੀ, ਡਾਕਾ ਮਾਰਨਾ, ਮੁਕੱਦਮਾ ਦਿਵਾਨੀ ਜਾਂ ਫ਼ੌਜਦਾਰੀ, ਗੱਲ ਕੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਕਚਹਿਰੀ ਜੱਟ, ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂਦਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਖਚਾਖਚ ਭਰੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਸੀਨਾ ਤਾਣ ਕੇ ਚੱਲਣਾ ਬਰਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ। ਹਰ ਇੱਕ ਚਿਹਰਾ ਲੁਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਘੜੀ ਖਾਲਸ ਦਾਤਰ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੈ।
ਚੰਗੜ, ਬਰੜ, ਬਾਂਗਦੀ, ਬਾਉੜੀ, ਸਾਂਸੀ ਤੇ ਬਾਜ਼ੀਗਰ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਪਾਤਰ ਹਨ। ਕਈ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਟੱਪਰੀਵਾਸ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਿੱਠ ਉਤੇ ਮੈਲ-ਕੁਚੈਲੇ ਲੀੜੇ ਲੱਦੀ, ਮੱਝਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੰਡ ‘ਤੇ ਨਿੱਕੇ-ਨਿੱਕੇ ਨਿਆਣੇ, ਤੌੜੀਆਂ, ਕੂੰਡੀਆਂ, ਟੁੱਟੀਆਂ ਲੈਂਪਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੰਜੀਆਂ ਤਕ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਵਿਰਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਆਏ ਮੋਚੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੁਹੱਲਾ, ਰੇਲਵੇ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਐਨ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਬਾਦ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਹੌਲੀ-ਹੌਲੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੋਲੀ, ਰਹਿਣੀ-ਬਹਿਣੀ ਤੇ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਤੋਂ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੰਚਾਇਤ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਅਲੱਗ-ਅਲੱਗ ਹੈਸੀਅਤ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ। ਬਿਰਾਦਰੀ ਦੇ ਝਗੜੇ, ਘਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਬੋਹੜ ਦੀ ਛਾਵੇਂ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਨਜਿੱਠਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਲਈ ਜੋੜੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਇੱਥੇ ਬਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਿਲਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਰੰਨ ਨਸਾ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਮਨਸੂਬਾ ਵੀ ਇਸੇ ਬੋਹੜ ਦੀ ਛਾਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ:
ਜੋਰੂ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦੀ,
ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ!
ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੰਬਾਈ ਦੇ ਰੁਖ ਵੱਸੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੱਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇੱਕੋ ਇੱਕ ਪਟਨੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਲਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਲੰਮੀ ਲੰਝੀ ਪੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਇੱਕੋ-ਇੱਕ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ। ਇੱਕ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਕਿਲਾ ਜੋ ਅੱਜਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਪੁਲੀਸ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਦਲ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਕਿਲਾ ‘ਸਿੰਘ ਪੁਰੀਆ’ ਮਿਸਲ ਦੇ ਬਾਨੀ ਨਵਾਬ ਕਪੂਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਭਤੀਜੇ ਨੇ ਬਣਵਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਖੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਫੈਜ਼ਲਪੁਰੀਏ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਾ ਕੇ ਪੱਟੀ ‘ਤੇ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਪੱਖੋਂ ਪੱਟੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਰਸਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਖਾਸ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। 1928 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੱਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਉਰਦੂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮਾਸਿਕ ਪੱਤਰ ‘ਇਮਾਨ’ ਨਿਕਲਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸੰਪਾਦਕ ਜਨਾਬ ਅਬਦੁਲ ਮਜੀਦ ਕਰਸ਼ੀ ਸਨ। ਕਾਜ਼ੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਕੱਦ ਛੋਟਾ, ਸਿਹਤ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਰ ਇਰਾਦੇ ਦੇ ਪੱਕੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਸਨ, ਜੋ ਪੱਟੀ ਨੂੰ 1946 ਵਿੱਚ ਅਲਵਿਦਾ ਕਹਿ ਕੇ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਉਥੇ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਦਫ਼ਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਨੌਕਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਤਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ। ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਕਾਲਜ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਤਰਸਯੋਗ ਹੈ। ਰਾਜਨੀਤੀ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਾ ਝੰਬਿਆ, ਦੁਸ਼ਵਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਰ ਹੈ। ਸਾਰੇ ਕਾਲਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਸੌ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ ਜਦਕਿ ਪੰਜ ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਸਰਹਾਲੀ ਕਾਲਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਢਾਈ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਹੈ।
ਪੱਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਗੋਸ਼ਟੀਆਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਅਜੋਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੀ ਉਨਤੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਪੱਟੀ ਇਲਾਕਾ ਨਿਵਾਸੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ ਗਹਿਰੀ ਦਿਲਚਸਪੀ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਵਲ ਨਿਗਾਰ ਸੁਖਬੀਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਥਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ- ‘ਸੜਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਕਮਰੇ’ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਵਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ‘ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਰਾਤ’ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੰਬਈ ਦੇ ਨੈਣ-ਨਕਸ਼ ਉਤਾਰੇ ਹਨ। ਪੱਟੀ ਦੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਈ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ ਹਾਰ ਲਈ ਧੂਹ ਪਾਉਂਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਇਸੇ ਮਾਝੇ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਬੁੱਲ੍ਹੇਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਸੀ:
ਜਿੱਤੇ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਇਕ ਕਸੀਰਾ,
ਹਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਹੀਰਾ
ਜਿੱਤ-ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ ਉਮਰ ਗੰਵਾਈ
ਹੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਹਾਰ ਫਕੀਰਾ।
ਜੇ ਬੁੱਲਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਹਾਰ ਨਾ ਮੰਨੀ,
ਤੂੰ ਬੇ ਮੁਰਸ਼ਦਾ, ਬੇ ਪੀਰਾ!!

Patti in district Tarn Taran is 50 Kms from Amritsar

Patti is the height of Govt indifference to Punjabi heritage especially archaeology.

Before Partition it was a tehsil of Lahore district. After bifurcation of Amritsar revenue district it becomes part of Tarn Taran district which is newly created. Patti has been a power centre next to Lahore. By any estimate it is not less than a 1000 year old power centre. By the time of advent of Guru Nanak Patti must have been a flourishing city.

The town is situated on a mound slightly at higher altitude. On the east-south is a small area mound but much more high than Patti. This mound which projects traditional Shiv Temple is about 50 ft high.

Patti in Punjabi means a street. It is believed the original name of the inhabitation would have been different. Later some street with the name of Haider patti became more famous than the main town and it might have been some what distinct from the main body of the town. So Haider di Patti became the main town Patti.

I don’t think Patti makes a mention in the ancient Indian history but in the medieval days it was known as 10 lakhi Patti. That means it generated high revenue of 10 Lakhs. The residents told me that the Mirzas were prominent rulers of Patti and only till 5-6 years ago traces of one of their haveli were there but now the farmer has demolished it without leaving any trace of the haveli.

The fortress of Patti is an archaeological pride of Punjab. Till the year 2003 local police station was housed in it. It was built in 1755 AD. There is an inscription in the well in the fortress which will tell more. The magnificent wall have also started eroding. If no effort is taken in appropriate time this precious piece of archaeology will also vanish.

There remnants of a marvellous islamic tomb near the Govt Girls school. This in my opinion is the pride of Patti after the fort. I have pursued the owner to do every thing to perserve it. And I am hopeful.

Patti finds rich references in the Sikh history especially of those turbulent days when Mughal power was on decline and Sikhs were rising. The fortress reminds the Sikhs the height of persecution of a rebellious group when their ladies were also taken into custody and their infants and children were also murdered before their eyes. Patti tortures are thus part of the regular Sikh prayer.

Bibi Rajni who was forced to marry a leper belonged to Kaura family of Patti Khatris. Unfortunately the Sikhs have not preserved any remain of the house where she stayed with an aged lady. I am told the descendents of Kauras are still residing in Patti and we can definitely know about the Hindu rulers of Patti.

Patti was ultimately won by Faisailpuria Misal. There is a rumour that Maharaja Ranjit Singh considered the town a potential threat and it is for this reason that he got the outer wall demolished.

Patti was also supposed to be the city of peers : seven faqeer sisters.

The above information is based on my dialogue with 2-3 person import of them being Police Havaldar Charan Singh. He promised me that he will send a copy of the article that was published in a daily on Patti city.

I wish some one will come up with some authentic details about Patti. It must have details in the Amritsar district gazetteer also.

As of 2001 India Patti had a population of 34,432. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Patti has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 60%. Many women are working women. In Patti, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
